Hello - I'm looking for clarity on reserving train tickets with a JR Pass. Our research suggests we should make train reservations months in advance, but it seems we can't make reservations until our passes are activated, which we can't do until after arriving in Japan. So how can we make reservations ahead of our travel time? Or are we not understanding the process? Many thanks!

Hello,
It depends on when you are travelling, but normally seat reservation is an easy process and doesn't need to be done months in advance. Unless you are travelling during a major public holiday, you can typically reserve seats just a few days before departure once you are in Japan at any JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or via the ticket machines.
