Hello

Can you please advise whether the JR Railpass would be the best for my partner and I. I arrive at Narita airport 27 September 5.30pm and my partner arrives 5.30am 28 September. I am staying the first night in Narita my partner will meet me at the hotel after which we want to make our way into Tokyo (Nishi Ogikuko/ Shinjuku) for 3 days & nights seeing the sights (Fri - Mon morning). We will be travelling to Kyoto on Monday for 3 nights, taking one day to travel to visit Nara then returning to Tokyo (Nishi Ogikuko/ Shinjuku) Thursday where we would like to travel in and around Tokyo until Saturday night when we fly back to New Zealand. We would like to take the bullet train to Kyoto and wonder whether a JR Railpass would be the best option for our trip.Should we buy a 7 day pass or a 14 day pass or what would you recommend for the 8th day when we will also need to train to the airport.

Also I am travelling at present and am in Dubai at my daughters if I need to purchase the passes for my partner and I can I have it sent to her?
Thank you for your assistance.

Hi there,

I think unless you intend to do a lot of travel in the Tokyo area a 7 day JR Pass will make the most sense for you. A 7 day rail pass will become cost effective if you spend over ¥28,300 on JR tickets. Roughly the same cost as a return trip to Kyoto from Tokyo. I think I would recommend the following for your travel:

  • The [Narita Express + Suica metro card deal] to get you into Tokyo from Narita and also give you ¥1500 of free JR and metro travel for your first few days in Japan. You could also look into the Metro 1 and 2 day deals that are available for purchase at Narita airport.
  • The 7 day Japan Rail Pass for use for your trip to Kyoto and back to Narita.

If you do decide to purchase a rail pass we do deliver to Dubai within 4 business days. Alternatively you can have your rail passes sent to New Zealand where our delivery speed is 3 business days.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your prompt and most helpful reply. Just one other question, could I purchase a pass in Dubai, if yes, where would you suggest? I am staying on Palm Jumeria which is reasonably central. Thank you in advance for your response. Regards Cilla

Hi there,

I'm afraid I can't recommend an agency in Dubai that can sell the JR Pass, however recommend you [take a look at this list of official agencies in the Middle East] - There are some Dubai based agencies listed that you could try.

Hope this helps!
