Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass or general JR Pass?

Hi there, happy 2026 first of all :-)/

I will have 9 days by myself in Japan next summer, before i will join a grouptrip of two weeks from Osaka to Tokyo. I can't figure out if it is best to buy the 5-day Kansai Hiroshima Area pass (combining it with loose tickets), or buy the general JR Pass of 7 days. Hope you can help me out... My route will be as followed:

day 1: from Osaka to Hiroshima
day 2: from Hiroshima to Miyajima
day 3: from Miyajima to Matsuyama
day 4: from Matsuyama to Takamatsu
day 5: from Takamatsu via Noashima to Okayama
day 6: from Okayama to Kurashiki
day 7: day in Kurashiki (or go cycling or half-day trip to Takahashi?)
day 8: from Kurashiki via Himeji to Kobe
day 9: from Kobe to Osaka

What is the best option, you think?

Hi there,

Happy new year!

For this trip, you'd like be best off getting the Kansai - HIroshima Area pass, Setouchi Area Pass or a 7-day JR West Pass.

In terms value - I'd try to be in Himeji by day 7 to cover the most expensive fares.

Other than that, I love the trip!

Hi Daniel-San, thanks for your answer. That Setouchi Area Pass looks perfect for the trip. Didn't hear or read about that Pass before, so thanks a lot! Of course your answer leads to more questions :-)...

  • I understand what you say about trying to be in Himeji by day 7, moneywise. Is an extra day in Kurashiki (or going to Takahashi) not really necessary, you think? Of course it has to do with personal taste, but would you say half a day in Kurashiki is enough and skip Takahashi?

  • Would you stay the night in Himeji or go through to Kobe that same day, as i planned to do so?

  • Do you have another suggestion for day 8 then? I don't need to go to Osaka before day 9 because i will have more days there with the group...

Thanks again!
Betty

Hi Betty,

I thought I had replied already, but must have forgot to press submit - in any case, sorry for the wait.

Personally I did not find Kurashiki very interesting. The canals and local temples are worth a stroll and I'm sure you'll have a good time, but it can all be seen in a few hours. So, going on-wards to Himeji should not be an obstacle. Cycling to Takahashi sounds a lot more fun to me.

Personally, I prefer to have a base and explore from. You could base yourself near Shin-Kobe or Sannomiya stations and explore that way. All the cities are relatively close.

What I'd recommend is add a day trip after Hiroshima to Onomichi and/or Tomo-no-Ura. Both are beautiful, and very relaxed destinations to spend some time at. There's also less frequented by tourists.

Hope that helps!
Daniel
