Is it worth getting the 7 day travel pass? I think my friend may have bought tickets between Kyoto and Nagoya already.
Nagoya-Kyoto-Nagoya-Tokyo-Nagoya
Sorry, just to be clearer, here's our rough plan:
24-26 Oct: Nagoya
26-28 Oct: Kyoto
29-30 Oct: Nagoya
30-1 Nov: Tokyo
1-3 Nov: Nagoya
We fly out from Nagoya's airport.
What passes should we buy? Particularly for Nagoya-Tokyo and back?
Hi there!
If it's possible for your friend to get a refund on those Kyoto-Nagoya tickets then I'd certainly look into it!
A JR Pass will give you great savings if you do your travel from the 26th-1st on it, but will not be worthwhile if you are only doing a Nagoya<>Tokyo loop. Here's the full cost breakdown:
- Nagoya > Kyoto: ¥5,640 (37mins, 147km)
- Kyoto > Nagoya: ¥5,240 (49mins, 147km)
- Nagoya > Tokyo: ¥10,580 (106mins, 366km)
- Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10,780 (126mins, 366km)
JR ticket cost: ¥32,240 for 4 legs
- 7 day Japan Rail Pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥3,940
In many ways, Nagoya is a great point to explore Japan fron as you can also easily access Takayama and Kanazawa in the Alps to the North, along with Tokyo and Kyoto/Kansai area, but you do need to be doing enough travel. If you do go with the rail pass option, don't forget that you can make good use of it around Tokyo.
Hope this helps!
Thank you ever so much, this is so helpful! I will definitely get the rail pass then. Can I reserve seats too?
Hi there,
Yes - seat reservations are 100% free for JR Pass holders. Simply visit the JR ticket office and present your rail pass letting the clerk know which train you'd like to reserve seats on.
Hope this helps!
Thanks!
