When is the best time to purchase JR pass while still in US?
I prefer to receive pass before travel begins.

Hi there,
You could basically do so at any time now. The JR Pass can be activated at any time within 3 months after issue date.
I'd do it a month or so before your estimated travel date, though you could do so now too, as the USD/YEN price is at a record low.
