I read somewhere that you had to purchase the rail pass 90 days before your trip to Japan and I just wanted to confirm if that is true or not?

Hi there,

A JR Pass has to be exchanged within 3 months after purchase, that's the only regulation here.

In other words, you can start buying the rail pass about starting 3 months before your trip starts.
