We will be spending the bulk of our trip in Tokyo, but will be traveling to Kyoto for a few days and doing a day trip to Nara before returning to Tokyo. Will a JR pass be worth it?

Hi there,
Yes, the JR Pass will be worth considering for this route. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. From there any additional travel you do with the pass would basically be free :)
Hope this helps,
Daniel
