We will be in Japan from the 27th December to 14th January and I am trying to work out what JR Pass to get, any help would be appreciated!

We are travelling from Narita to Nagano (Nozawa Onsen) on the 27th and stay there until the 3rd January. We really haven't set anything in stone, but are thinking the following:

3rd&4th January-Tokyo

5th Tokyo-Kyoto
6th-Kyoto
7th-Kyoto-Osaka-Kyoto (day trip to Osaka)
8th-Kyoto (day trip to Nara)
9th-Kyoto (day trip to Nagoya)
10th- Kyoto-Hiroshima
11th-Hiroshima-Tokyo

12th-14th Tokyo and day trips to surroundings

What pass should I get? I can see that the Tokaido pass covers Tokyo to Osaka and then the Sanyo pass will cover Osaka to Hiroshima. Does this mean I need to buy 2 different JR passes? It would be good if we could get just one 7 day pass, but which one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tamaryn

Hi there!

For your trip, the nationwide 7 day JR Pass will be best as it covers all JR zones and lines (there is also no Tokaido pass available). This would be for use from the 5th to the 11th and will cover all the bullet train lines you list.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your help Mari, I was very confused!

No Tokaido pass- I must have been looking at an old website.

To get from Narita to Nagano and then Nagano back to Tokyo, am I able to buy this pass cheaper online in Australia, or should I just sort it out when I get to Tokyo?

Not a problem :)

If it's the 7 day JR Pass, you can only purchase this outside Japan - I recommend you purchase upto 1 week before you leave to give good time for delivery and so on.

If you're only going return from Narita to Nagano and then back to Tokyo (with no further travel), I think you'll be better off just purchasing JR tickets on arrival in Japan.

Hope this helps!
