Hi, I'll be traveling end of March next yr for 10 days from Narita.

3 nights (Mar28-30) in Tokyo shinjuku
2 nights (Mar31-Apr1) in Yukanada
3 nights (Apr2-4) in Kyoto
1 nights (Apr5) in Tokyo
Departing (Apr 6) airport

1) I was thinking of using the 7-days JR pass starting Mar 31. Prior to that I will buy the day pass. Do you think this is the best cost savings strategy to my visit?
2) how much time do I need to travel from 1 destination to the next.
3) what is the fastest way to travel from Yukanada to Kyoto using the JR pass

Any suggestion will be great.
Thanks

Hi there!

I think that starting a 7 day pass on the 31st to the 6th will be your best bet. Here's a breakdown of your basic savings over this period:

  1. Tokyo > Nagano: ¥7,970 (105mins, 222km)
  2. Nagano > Kyoto: ¥10,630 (227mins, 398km)
  3. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13,420 (161mins, 513km)
  4. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥35,160 for 4 legs

As you can see you'll make good savings using the 7 day pass this way and also have the flexibility to do more travel as needed. For your trip into Tokyo and travel over the first few days, I recommend the [Narita Express + Suica deal]. This will get you directly to Shinjuku on your first day via the Narita Express, and also give you ¥1500 of metro/JR travel to use on your days 2 & 3. On your return to Tokyo you'll be covered by the JR Pass and will be able to use all the JR lines and stations within the city freely.

The best way from Yudanaka to Kyoto will be to use the non-JR Nagano Dentetsu line to Nagano JR station, and then use the WideView (really nice scenic train) down to Nagoya through the alps. From here you'd use the bullet train to Kyoto - click the link in your costings for more on this. You may also like to see this great guide on the Yudanaka area.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mari,

On my return to Narita airport, does the 7 days pass cover the Ltd. Exp Narita Express? I see there's a direct JR going from shinjuku to narita.

Also how, when and where can I make the seat reservation? Is it a must to reserve seat.

Thank you
