For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

Do I need to order a place in any root in advance?
Hi again,
You do not need to but it is recommend to reserve seats in advance, this way you are secure of seating and it is free with the JR Pass. You can do so up to 5minutes before departure.
