I have a Green JR pass. I am taking my son from Tokyo to Osaka (Universal Studio). I have a few questions.

  1. I know Nozomi and Mizuho is not allowed on the JR pass. Is the Hikari the fastest alternative?
  2. Do you have to make seat reservation in advance?
  3. If I wanted to upgrade to gran class, how much would I have to pay additionally?

Hi there,

1.) Yes! Please read all about the Hikari here.

2.) Seat reservations are recommended but not required, you can always take a non-reserved seat.

3.) There is no Gran Class on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen. Even if it were, then both the high speed fare and Gran class fare would be added to your ticket. The price would depend on what route.
