Dear Daniel-san,

We will be in 2 adults and one 11 year old child travelling 31 days within Japan as the following:
July 2nd – landing in Narita airport. Head to Matsumoto. July 3rd – Matsumoto
July 4th – Omachi ( base to make the Alpine route)
July 5th – Alpine route
July 6th – Toyama (base to visit Kurobe Gorge)
July 7th to 9th – Takayama
July 10th to 11th – Gujo Hachiman
July 11th - Nagoya (one day trip) / head to Kyoto
July 11th to 19th – Kyoto (our base to visit Amanohashidate, Nara, Osaka, Himeji)
July 20th – Hiroshima
July 21st – one day trip to Miyajima
July 22nd to Aug 1st – Tokyo (our base also to visit Niko, Yokohama, Kamakura and maybe Shiogama)
Aug 1st – afternoon, departure to our home in Brazil…

As you can see, that’s a quite exciting and mainly long tour within Japan so suggestions are very welcome!
We are still in doubt if a Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass would be useful for the first days (does JRPass cover the areas of the mentioned pass?)and that is one additional point to have in mind and activate the JR Pass later to have it until our last day or if we activate it immediately in Narita and cover the rest of the days paying the remaining routes without the JRPass. Or should we buy a 21 day plus a 7 day JRPass but still having remaining days without the benefit of the JRPass?
Please help me to figure it out in the best way (even suggesting another order of destinations) =0)
Thank you for your super help!

Hello there,

Looking at your itinerary, I think a 21 day JR Pass would make most sense when started at July 6th. Travel before then won't cost that much relative to the rest and you can't use the pass on the Apline route, so starting it after makes sense. Activating it on the 6th would mean that it is valid until the 26th in Tokyo. This will give you a couple days in Tokyo to do your more expensive side trips, to Nikko and Shiogama and you'd be fine using local tickets for travel to Yokohama and Kamakura, as these do not cost a lot.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel-san,
I really appreciated your always wise inputs!
Will I be able to activate the JRPass in Toyama?
Another question for you: what would you recommend as the cheapest transportation from Narita airport to Matsumoto and then from Tokyo to Narita - is there any special kind of combo, like N'EX Tokyo? I was very disappointed because the round trip is valid only for 14 days... =0(
