After a Kyoto tour, I will be in Japan a few more days and can buy the JR kansai wide area pass to go to Himeji.

I am planning a one day trip to Kanazawa and see that the Thunderbird train goes there, but what JR pass is it on? And if it is partly on a Jr West pass, is there a surcharge to get there? And can you buy a one day pass for Kanazawa?

Or is it just cheaper to buy a ticket for a roundtrip on the day of travel ?

Hi there,

Kanazawa is only covered by the Nationwide JR Pass. Given that you'll be only doing a single trip to Kanazawa, how about using your Wide area pass to get as far as Tsuruga and then paying for tickets from there to Kanazawa? This way your additional ticket costs for the entire trip to Kanazawa will be around ¥9400.

Hope this helps!
