Hi Daniel sun, I am planning a 15-17 day trip to Japan. My plan is as follows:

7 nights Tokyo, including 3 day trips to Nikko, Fuji and Kamakura.
2 nights Kyoto
4 nights Osaka, including 2 day trips to Kobe and Himeji
1 night in Nara
1 night in Hiroshima
1 night in Fukuoka
Then back to Tokyo.

Which pass(es) would you recommend?
The JR 14 day pass , maybe another regional pass???

Many Thanks for your efforts and answer
Best regards Marco

Dear Marco,

Looks like a fun trip! Not many make the trip down to Fukuoka, a shame, as I personally love Kyushu.

For the JR Pass, 100% get a 14-day Japan Rail Pass. It will pay itself back a lot on your trip. Travel on the Shinkansen to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and especially the route back ads up to a lot!

Be sure to visit Nikko as well on the days that you have your pass, as you can use the Shinkansen for part of the way there. Saving both time and money.

A regional pass makes sense if you stay in 1-2 regions, you nearly visit them all in Japan, so a Japan Rail Pass is definitely the better option. I recommend reading our Guide to regional passes should you want to know more about them.

Kind regards,
Daniel
