Hi!
I will be going to Japan with my family (my two children age 11 and 9 and my cousin, his wife, and their child age 9) in February for 9 days 8 night. Here is my itinerary, do you think this will work? Concern about time limit on the 22 and 25th.

Feb 17: Land in Narita at 3:30 pm. Head to OSA/KYO. Have not booked hotel yet.
Feb 18: Eastern Kyoto
Feb 19: Arashiyama
Feb 20: Osaka
Feb 21: Hakone. Stay one night for hotsprings ryokan. Have not booked ryokan yet.
Feb 22: Head towards TYO. Hotel in Shinjuku. Half day trip to Yokohama.
Feb 23-24: Western Tokyo, Asakusa and Odaiba.
Feb 25: Tsukiji Fish Market early morning. Then Imperial Palace and Ginza. With 6:15pm flight back home from Narita.

Should we get the 7 day pass? Regular or green pass? If we do, how does it work for the travel to/from Narita? Any recommendation for hotel in KYO/OSA and/or hotsprings ryokan?

Thanks in advance!!

Hello there,

Yes, I would recommend looking at a 7 day JR Pass for your trip and use it from Feb 17th to Fed 22nd. Travel to Narita from Narita Airport is also included.

For a Ryokan, you could visit Kurama Onsen in Kyoto. Kurama is tucked away in the northern mountains of Kyoto and sees relatively few tourists. You can also make great hikes in the surrounding area to Kibube.

An other, popular Onsen area in Kansai is Arima Onsen. Arima Onsen is one of the best Onsen resorts of Kansai Airport. There are many Ryokan you can stay at and different baths to try out. It is located near Kobe but can be reached in a timely manner from Kyoto and Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Someone recommended we go to Kawazu instead of Hakone for onsen ryokan to hope for early blooming of the cherry blossom. I was wondering if the 7 day JR pass would cover travels to Kawazu? If so, how would I get there from Kyoto? TIA!

Hi Monica,

Most of the route to Kawazu is covered but you will need a normal ticket for the last part from Ito - Kawazu, this is around 1,600yen.

You can use a Kodama service from Kyoto - Atami, there use the JR Ito line to Kawazu.
