my friend and I arrive at Kansai, then to Osaka for one night, onto Tanabe and then a few days on the Kumano Kodo.
after that we head to Tokyo for a few days, to Nikko area for a few days and back to Tokyo.
we really don't want to hassle with individual tickets.
maybe a JR West and a JR East?

If you want a pass for this, then the only option covering this route entirely would be the Japan Rail Pass for 7 days.
Alternatively, you could look at a flight from Shirakama - Tokyo to cut down on the travel time, but you'd not need the pass anymore.
