7 day JR ticket vs single train tickets + metro tickets

Hello,

I am planning to do the following trips during the 6th August until the 13th August:

Narita airport -> Tokyo 6th August
Tokyo several trips in Tokyo downtown by metro between the 6th and 9th
Tokyo -> Kyoto 9th August
Kyoto -> Nara 10th August
Nara -> Tokyo 11th August
Tokyo several trips in Tokyo downtown by metro between the 11th and 13th
Tokyo -> Narita airport 13th August

What I would like to know is:
Should I buy a 7day JR pass or should I buy single train and metro tickets?
Does this pass allows me to use the metro in Tokyo or should I buy another pass for the metro?

Hi Diogo!

Looking at your trip, I recommend:

  • 1 x NEX + Suica prepaid card deal. This will give you ¥1500 of free metro travel for use while you are in Tokyo, and will get you into Tokyo from Narita. (You also will not have to queue to activate your Japan Rail Pass at Narita and can get straight to your hotel)

  • 1 x 7 day rail pass for activation from 7-13th. This will give you free travel on all JR lines within Tokyo, your trip down to Kyoto & Nara and back, and will also cover your return trip to Narita, giving you good savings over standard tickets, and leaving you open to add day trips to your plans (eg. Kyoto <> Hiroshima).

Please note that the JR Pass does not cover the Tokyo Metro, but the Suica prepaid card you get will cover around 5-8 trips depending on the distance.
