My small family and I will be visiting Japan in November this year. Upon researching about Japan in particularly on transportation matters, my husband and I are in a bit of a pickle on which JR Pass, out of the many options out there, would be best for us.

In a nutshell, we will be landing in Narita Airport on the day of our arrival there. We will be staying in Tokyo for 6 days and we will be going to Osaka for 3 days after that before we will go back to Narita on the last night before we depart back to Brunei.

Could you advise us on which JR Pass would be the best one so that our travel would be hassle-free and less confusing as our daughter of 2 years old would be tagging along as well? We have read on the Japan Rail Pass and Hokoriku Arch Pass and we are still unsure.

Hi there,

You have three options: purchase a JR Pass, purchase a Hokuriku Arch Pass, or purchase your tickets individually. My suggestion would be to purchase your tickets individually - it will definitely be the cheapest option and since you’ll mostly be travelling via Shinkansen, you can reserve tickets online in advance here on the Navitime Site.

While the Hokuriku Pass might come out to be slightly cheaper, it would involve a longer trip between Tokyo and Osaka and would also involve changing trains - purchasing direct Shinkansen tickets would enable you to make the trip on a singular train and would make it significantly faster.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
