Yes, I would recommend using a 7 day JR Pass. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same cost as a 7 day JR Pass between Tokyo - Kyoto. From there any additional travel is what you save :)

thanks Daniel. this is really helpful. one more question, since i will be in Japan for 9 days i am planning to activate my JR pass only on 27th Nov (so that i can use for my tokyo-kyoto round trip). any suggestion (day passes) for my first couple of days in Tokyo, mainly for sight seeing places around Tokyo..
