Hi,

I'm planning a trip to Japan during the last 2 weeks of June. I was contemplating on purchasing the 14 day JR pass and was wondering if it would be cost effective.

Will be arriving at Narita airport > Tokyo (shinjuku area) staying 4 days, also planning on using subways to tour the city.
Tokyo > Mt fuji area/ Hakone (day trip) > Tokyo
Tokyo > Yokosuka (staying with family, another 4 days).
Yokosuka > kyoto (day trip) > Yokosuka.
Then finally Yokosuka > Narita airport.

Hopefully this made sense. Please advise and thanks in advance.

Hi there!,

I think for a trip like this you will be best to look at how you can maximise the value of a 7 day pass (¥28,300), and try and make up the other parts of your trip via other tickets.

7 day Japan Rail Pass

The 7 day rail pass at ¥28,300 will basically pay for itself via the day trip to Kyoto from Yokosuka (¥25,820 in JR tickets). All other JR travel for 6 days either side of your day trip to Kyoto will be free including the return to Narita so I certainly recommend this as a way to give yourself maximum flexibility.

Other good value tickets

For the other parts of your trip, I recommend:

For arrival in Tokyo you should start with either a [Narita Express + Suica prepaid metro card]combined deal, or the combined Keisei skyliner from Narita + Tokyo Subway 2 day open pass to give you good savings .

For your travel to Hakone you should look at the 2 day Hakone Free Pass which will cover all travel from Shinjuku up to and around the Hakone area.

Hope this helps!
