7 Day pass valid on JR subway lines and shinkansen and can be activated later?

Hi! I'm traveling to Tokyo for 10 days but planning on going to Niigata the second to last day. Can I activate my JR Pass two days after my arrival? and then it will be valid on all the JR lines in tokyo like the Yamanote line and I can use it on the Joetsu line to Niigata right?

Hi there!

Yes, you can activate your JR Pass any time up to 3 months from the date of purchase, so as long as you're planning to activate within this time you will be fine.

You can use the JR Pass on all JR lines around Tokyo (Here's map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference), however as JR does not operate the metro you will be unable to use the pass for travel here.

You will be able to use the JR Pass on all lines, including the Joetsu line to Niigata. Don't forget that seat reservations are free for Japan Rail Pass holders, so be sure to visit the ticket office and claim your seat before you board!
