Buying the pass from abroad and in Japan

Hello there,

I will be travelling to Japan next week and will be needing the pass from 18. 11. (for 7 days) to travel around. My travel companion is already in Japan, he arrived from Seoul earlier this month. He did not know about JR pass. Is is possible for him to buy the pass as well and have it delivered together with mine? Or do you need to order the pass before you enter Japan?

Also if it is not possible. Are there any other passes available if we want to travel from Tokyo to Osaka, Osaka - Kyoto and back to Tokyo again to catch the flight back home?
