Hi,

I'll be in Japan for 6-7 days. I'll be flying to & from Nagoya. My rough plan is as follows:

Day 1 AM : Nagoya to Osaka
Day 2: Osaka
Day 3 Noon: Osaka to Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo
Day 5: Tokyo
Day 6: Tokyo to Yokohama Day Trip - Tokyo
Day 7 AM: Tokyo to Nagoya Airport. Evening flight from Nagoya.

Will JR pass be worth buying for this trip?
Another thing i would like to know is.. If i decide to make changes to the itinerary and visit only Tokyo, and pay regular fare with Suica Card. What is the range of typical subway/train ticket price around tokyo? I know the minimum fare per trip is 160 yen. What is the maximum fare?

Hi there,

Let's have a look at what tickets would cost without the JR Pass and see what a JR Pass could do for you :)

Nagoya - Osaka ¥ 6,380
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,950
Tokyo - Yokohama (return) ¥ 900
Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 10,780

For a total of ¥ 32,010 or ¥ 3,710 in savings with the 7 day JR Pass (¥ 28,300).

As for local travel, the JR Pass also covers the local JR network in Osaka and Tokyo, so your savings would end up higher. Without the JR Pass the fare is between 130-260 yen within Tokyo 23 wards, however this is not an absolute limit and can increase on distance travelled. I would say that on average a ticket is 200yen.
