Hi :)

We are heading to Japan in Feb 2020 with itinerary as follows:
Shinjuku 2 nights
Mt Fuji 1 night
Osaka 4 nights
Kyoto 3 nights
Then off to Hakuba for 10 nights skiing before heading back to Tokyo for one night before we fly out.

I have been reading up on getting between most places however just have a couple of questions.

Shinjuku - Mt Fuji, I understand we can only get to Otsuki with the JR pass ? Is there an early train out of Shinjuku as we want to explore as much as we can the day we get there (weather permitting!).

Mt Fuji (Kawaguchiko) - Osaka, I have read different routes all which seem not so simple! What would be the best route to take?

Also, getting around the cities of Osaka & Kyoto, is much covered by JR pass or is it private trains we will have to purchase tickets for?

Thank you in advance! :)

Hi there,

Local trains out of Shinjuku start at around 6 a.m., you could leave as early as you'd like.

Neither route is easy from Kawaguchiko - Osaka. In terms of best savings with the JR Pass, it is best to take local trains from Kawaguchiko to Shin-Yokohama, then use the Shinkansen from there to Osaka.

The JR Pass covers the JR Network in Osaka and Kyoto. Osaka has an extensive network and you should be able to get to most area's. In Kyoto, the JR Is limited to the west and south of the city. You can use the city bus in Kyoto to most places, 500yen day tickets can be purchased from the drivers and generally provide the best value if you take 3 or more rides.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel, I will look into that.

Based on the above itinerary, I am not sure if it would be worth to get the 14 day pass or 7 day pass? I am thinking the 14 day pass would be best, and most useful as it would cover us right up until we get to Hakuba, and then we would just need to pay for the trip from Hakuba to Tokyo. Or do you think the 7 day pass would be more beneficial?

Also, in regards to booking the seats for trains does this have to be done at the train station?

Thanks again for you help!

Also, are the Shinjuku trains to Mt Fuji included on the Rail pass?
