What do you think about going to Japan without any plans and make them as I go. Should I get the 21 days JR. Also are these consecutive days?

BTW, I am going alone and something that I am inetersted in doing is spending time with people, perhaps join them to an inportant tourist places.
I am very interested in the high speed trains. I don't know if there are some tours, seminars or exibits that show the engineering aspects of the design and/or construction.
