Hi all,
Going to Japan in a couple of months. Everything is slowly coming together, however we are finding it hard to organise at tour of Mt Fuji that starts in Fuji city! It seems a majority begin in Tokyo... which defeats the purpose of us staying in Fuji City. We are still going ahead with staying in Fuji City as accommodation has been booked and paid for, we are just going to make our own way there and see Mt Fuji without a guide! However I am finding it a little difficult... so if anyone could help?
We are staying in a hotel close to Hamamatsu-cho Station. And in Fuji City we are staying in a place near Shin-Fuji Station. What is the best and quickest way to get from our hotel in Tokyo to our hotel in Fuji? And from our hotel how do we make our way to the Kachi Kachi Yama Ropeway? I don't need to be part of a tour group to access the ropeway do I? We will be getting a JR pass so we would prefer for travel to be on lines that are covered by our pass. But I know that when we reach the city of Fuji it won't be as possible. Any help would be grateful!!!

Thank you,
Erica.

Hi Erica,

Shin-Fuji is not the best place to stay at as no other trains except for the Shinkansen stop there.

However there are buses travelling from there to various regions among the mountain, mainly Fuji Yoshida. There's not a lot of information available about busses on-line and most is in Japanese. However the local tourist information is a great help for getting on the bus. Alternatively you can such the Shinkansen to travel to a nearby Shinkansen station that has local line connections into to Fuji area, such as Mishima. From here you can use local train to visit regions around Fuji, including Yoshida and Gotemba.

Shin-Fuji is directly on the Shinkansen from Tokyo, so it's easy to get to your hotel.

As for travel to Kachi Kachi Ropeway, take a Shinkansen from Shin-Fuji to Mishima and take an express bus from there. Going from Shin Fuji to Kawaguchiko by rail is possible but takes 4Hours. It is possible to walk from Kawaguchiko to the the Kachi Kachi Ropeway in 15-20minutes.

Personally I'd recommend a visit to Gotemba which has some of the best spots to view Fuji from.

I hope this helps!
Daniel

Hey Daniel,

Thanks so much for your response! I really wish I'd looked further into the location of the accommodation before we agreed to book it!! I didn't realise the station labled 'Shin-Fuji' was not the right place to be! Wish I had spoke to you first before anything, because I looked up Gotemba and it looks beautiful!!!

I will definately look into going by bus, rather than train, as a four hour ride via train is not very appealing! Would you have any idea how long that could possibly take? I'd appreciate a link to the information you were able to find online in regards to busses going from Shin-Fuji (Area) to Mt Fuji. Then I can make some better progress in planning out how we can get about in our one day there.

Thank you so much Daniel.
Erica.

Hi Erica,

Sorry I forgot to add that Gotemba is pretty easy to access from Shin Fuji, here's an example route. Also from Gotemba several buses go toward Fuji and by taking a bus from here you can save some money on the bus fare.

The official bus website is online in Japanese but this website displays some additional travel from Shin-Fuji, mainly on how to travel to Fujinomiya.

I hope this helps too!
Daniel
