Hi, I'm planing a trip to Japan with my 13 years old son on December 2023. we'll be in Tokyo for 6 days and then in Kyoto for another 5 days, then back to Tokyo for the flight back. what is the best and cheapest way for this roundtrip, to travel via train? JR pass? the Nozomi train? and what is the best way to purchase those tickets, Online a month or so before or there at the counter?

Hi Noa,
In general, you can consider a 7-day JR Pass if you make a return trip Tokyo - Kyoto using the pass. You can use the Hikari Shinkansen for free, or pay a nominal fee to travel on the Nozomi. The pass is similar in cost as a return ticket (if you order before the new pricing) and when be especially useful if you cover any additional transport with it (think of the local JR network, day trips and travel to the airport).
Tickets can be purchased 1 month before travel, and we recommend doing so at any station.
