We will be travelling with the JR Pass. What is the best way to get from Takayama to Kanazawa? Would it be to a train via Toyama, or take a bus directly from Takayama itself?

Hi there,
The Bus from Takayama to Kanazawa actually takes slightly longer than the JR route via Toyama and is not free! Given that, the JR train is a better option I think.
The JR route from Takayama to Kanazawa via toyama takes 2.4 hours, and will be totally free for JR holders. [Here's a sample itinerary].
For reference, the [Nohi express bus leaves Takayama > Kanazawa] takes approximately 2.5 hours and as it is a non-JR service, will cost ¥3,300 per person.
