Can I upgrade regional passes to green car?

Hello,

I am planning to go to Kyoto via KIX and stay for a week. I also think to buy Kansai Area Pass because I want to go to Nara as well. I want to ask for several things before my trip.

Can I upgrade my seat to green car when I want to go from KIX to Kyoto and vice versa?
If I can, how much it will cost? Can I pay it on the station?
Because I will be staying for a week and the Pass only available for 4 days maximum, can I buy the pass 2 times at the same time? (4 days pass + 3 days pass)

I wish you can help enlighten me.

Hi there,

There is no direct upgrade path to Green Class using regional passes. You can still pay extra to upgrade but this is not worth it in terms of value.

In Japan train fares have two components: 1.) Base fare based on distance 2.) Comfort/Green Fare. The latter is only charged on Ltd. express trains and would have to be paid separately. Going from Kansai to Kyoto this would be ¥ 1,910 for the base fare, plus ¥ 2,290 for the Green Seat.

The regional pass would this cover the first part and you'd have to pay ¥ 2,290 extra. Should you wish to do so, then this can be done at any manned ticket window. Remember that if you take a normal (reserved) seat, then no charges apply with a regional pass.

You can buy more than 1 pass for your trip, as long as their usage dates do not overlap.
