Hello, over 8 day period I shall travel from
Haneda airport to Takayama
Then to Kyoto
Then to Osaka
Then to Narita airport
Which rail pass is best for the fastest travel along that itinerary and for local side trips to castles, gardens etc, please.

I would suggest a 7-day JR Pass for this trip - yet it would depend a bit on your travel timing. As you stated, you have 8 days, while the pass will be one short of that. If you can at least return to Tokyo on day 7, then this pass will help you make good savings.
The JR Pass also allows you to make unlimited stops along the way.
