Activating your Japan Rail Pass at Sapporo Station is quick and straightforward, usually about 5 minutes. The easiest option for international visitors is the JR Information Desk near the west ticket gate (open 8:30–19:00), staffed by English, Chinese and Korean speakers. Bring your exchange order voucher and passport, tell the staff the date you'd like to start using your pass, and you're done. Sapporo is Hokkaido's rail hub, so once activated, you can head straight off to New Chitose Airport, Otaru, Asahikawa, Hakodate and beyond.
Welcome to Sapporo: the gateway to Hokkaido and one of Japan's most enjoyable cities. If you've just arrived and need to activate your Japan Rail Pass, relax: it's a simple, friendly process that takes only a few minutes, and Sapporo Station has multiple well-staffed places to do it. There's no need to feel daunted by the big, busy station; the staff handle international visitors all day long, and you'll be on your way in no time.
Activating the JR Pass at Hokkaido Station
Sapporo Station has three places where you can exchange your voucher for your physical JR Pass. Each has slightly different opening hours, so the best one for you may depend on your arrival time.
JR Information Desk (recommended for international visitors)
Open 8:30–19:00. Located in the central hall near the west ticket gate, just beside the JR Ticket Office. This desk is operated specifically for foreign visitors, with staff who speak English, Chinese and Korean — making it the easiest and most convenient option for most travellers. You can exchange your pass, buy tickets, and make seat reservations all here.
JR Travel Service Centre (Twinkle Plaza) — Sapporo Branch
Open 10:00–18:00. Located to the left of the tourist information centre, near the east ticket gate, and operated by the same desk. A great choice if you'd also like to ask questions about travelling around Hokkaido while you're there.
JR Travel Service Centre (Twinkle Plaza) — South Exit Branch
Open 11:00–19:00. Located close to the south station exit. Handy if you're arriving or staying on that side of the station.
Hours are subject to change — verify before travel if your arrival is early or late in the day.
All three can also make seat reservations (free with your pass). If you want to reserve several trains at once, bring a written or printed list of the trains and dates you'd like — it makes the process much quicker and easier.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What if I pick the wrong start date for my pass?
You only set your start date at the moment of exchange. The staff will ask when you'd like to begin using the pass, and you can choose any date within 30 days of the exchange visit. Once your pass is printed and activated, the start date is fixed — so take a quiet moment to confirm your itinerary before stepping up to the counter.
2. Will there be a long queue at Sapporo Station?
Usually it's manageable. The JR Information Desk is well-staffed and used to international visitors. The busiest times are mid-morning and around major arrivals; if one desk looks busy, try one of the Twinkle Plaza branches, which can also process exchanges. The exchange itself only takes about 5 minutes.
3. Can I get to New Chitose Airport with my JR Pass?
Yes, the JR Rapid Airport train runs from Sapporo Station to New Chitose Airport in about 37 minutes and is covered by your Japan Rail Pass. It's the fastest and easiest way to and from the airport.
4. Is the nationwide JR Pass or the Hokkaido Rail Pass better?
It depends on your trip. If you're travelling around Hokkaido and also to Honshu (e.g. Tokyo), the nationwide JR Pass is ideal. If your whole trip stays within Hokkaido, the regional JR Hokkaido Rail Pass may work out cheaper. Compare them based on your itinerary.
