Ski/Snowboard day trip from Tokyo by Japan Rail Pass!

Are you in or going to Tokyo with a JR Pass and fancy some snow time on the mountain slopes? Maybe you just want to spend some time in the snowy peaks but don’t want to walk :)? During the Japanese ski season of 22 Dec – 6 May you can use the JR Pass from Tokyo to travel direct by bullet train to the well equipped ski resort Gala Yuzawa in the Japanese alps in under 1.5hrs.

A medium-sized resort with access onto further nearby mountains, GALA Yuzawa has a variety of runs from 1,181 m down to 358 m, including powder runs after fresh snow, plus a well-equipped terrain park. The terrain leans toward beginners and intermediates, so it's a friendly place to learn, but there's enough to keep stronger skiers happy too.

You can see the full course map here.

Perfect for JR Pass: Rent all your gear once you arrive!

One of the great things about GALA Yuzawa is that you can rent all your equipment on site — skis or board, boots, poles, and even jackets, trousers and gloves — so you can travel light on the train and pick everything up on the day. If you have bad memories of poorly maintained rental gear, you're in for a pleasant shock in Japan: kit is well looked after, with the latest models brought in each season. (Rental prices are set by the resort and change year to year, so confirm the current rate on the official site before you go.)

If you'd rather bring your own skis or board, you can also send them ahead by Japan's luggage-forwarding service and collect them at the resort's delivery corner — no wrestling a board bag onto a packed Shinkansen.

How to get there by Japan Rail Pass

Perhaps the best thing about GALA is how genuinely JR Pass-friendly it is. The bullet-train terminal sits right in the base gondola station, so you simply step off the train, sort your gear, and get whisked up the mountain — all within about 80 minutes direct from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen.

And because the Joetsu Shinkansen (the Toki and Tanigawa services) isn't a Nozomi or Mizuho train, it's fully covered by the nationwide Japan Rail Pass with no extra surcharge — that one-way fare of roughly ¥7,020 is value you're getting back from your pass on a single trip. See the official GALA Yuzawa access page for the latest timetable details.

Good to know before you go

  • Great for first-timers and families. Wide, gentle runs near the top gondola station, a ski school with English lessons, and snow-play areas mean non-skiers and beginners are well catered for.

  • It's a true day trip. Leave Tokyo in the morning, ski or play in the snow, and be back in the city by evening — no car and no overnight stay required.

  • Check the snow report first. The official site posts up-to-date snow conditions, so you can decide on the day whether there's enough cover for the kind of skiing you want.

More information

Gala Yuzawa has a well maintained english website with more details on the slopes, rental options and directions. The site also has up to date snow reports so you can decide on the day if there’s enough snow for you.

Have fun on the slopes!
