Hi there,

Both routes work, however, I'm interested to know how you plan to go from Nagoya to Kyoto by night? It is less than 1 hour by train from Nagoya using the Shinkansen. A JR Pass would not be cost-efficient for your route, as normal tickets would simply cost less.

Personally, I do love Kyoto, there's a lot to see there in terms of culture, history and Japanese tradition. Though if you prefer to see the more modern metropolis side of Japan, then Osaka is better.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
