Are the passes consecutive days or just travel days on the train

I was wondering if I purchased a 7 day pass, does it start from day one you travel on the 1st train leg and you then have the 7 days following to use the pass whether you travel or not or is it based on 7 days of actual train travel?
eg we want to travel every 2nd day on the trains, would a 7 day pass work?
