My wife and I are travelling to Japan in November where we shall be using a JR pass for one week.
However my wife will be travelling a week before me so my question is, when she hands in her exchange order at Narita airport, can she exchange mine at the same time or will I have to do it myself in person the following week when I arrive.?

Hi Alex,
When you exchange your JR Pass at the JR office in Japan you also need to present your Passport as proof of ID. This means that you will need to be present to exchange it.
