Haneda-Hakuba--Kyoto-Osaka

Hello there,

The fastest way to get to your ski resort is by train to Nagano and from there take the bus to Hakuba (as on the Ski Resort web page.

Savings you could make with the JR Pass
Tokyo --> Nagano ¥ 7,970 (Bus--> Hakuba
Nagano ---> bus to Matsumoto
Matsumoto ---> Kyoto ¥ 9,680

This would add up to ¥ 17,650 as the 7 Day JR-Pass is 28,300 this would not be recommended.
You are probably better of buying single tickets as you travel and combine the bus with the train to get to your destination fastest.

Would it be wiser to fly into Osaka.. I was just gonna fly into Tokyo as I thought it was closer.

I don't think it matters much, you could probably save some money though by planning a return to and from the same airport. I just saw on the Wiki Travel page that once a day a direct trains leaves from Tokyo to Hakuba which may be of interest to you. This site offers a great oversight of how to get there as well.
