We have a JR pass and will be travelling from Maebashi on the 8th April to Osaka. It would be nice to break the trip with a visit to Hakone via Odawara. What is the best way to arrange this? Am I able to activate my JR Pass in Australia prior to arriving in Japan and therefore book seats before getting there?

Hello Sacha,
The Shinkansen station for Hakone is called Odawara and is directly on the route between Tokyo and Osaka. It would not be hard to add a stopover here.
The JR Pass can only be activated in Japan. From that point you can start making reservations.
