Tokyo - Kyoto - Takayama - Kanazawa

We will be traveling to Japan , arriving in Tokyo with plans to go to from Tokyo->Kyoto (on day 2 of trip as early as possible); Kyoto -> Takayama (on day 5 as late as possible); Takayama -> Kanazawa (on day 6); then Kanazawa -> Tokyo (on day 7); we are not sure of perhaps some day trips out of Tokyo before our departure on day 12.

Traveling with our 3 children (teenagers); we’d like to get reserve seating to sit together
1. Will a 7 day JR pass work for our plans ?
2. Can I make reservations with seat assignments for these plans now ? (did not see English instructions on how to do this beyond Kyoto)
3. To do this - should we get a standard or Green pass

Hi there,

1.) Yes, a 7 day JR Pass would work well here.

2.) You can make seat reservations once you are in Japan and have activated the JR Pass.

3.) Green Class is options but a great choice if you want to travel in comfort & quiet.

Sorry for more questions, but:
1. Is it possible to make reservations on line before we arrive in Japan? (But do I need help though with someone who can read Japanese?)
2. Can we make seat reservations with a standard or only Green pass?
3. Is there a chance things will be all booked with the upcoming holidays (travel 12/22-1/4)- if we wait until we get there?
4. To maximize our time in Kyoto, do you have a recommendation on which train to take from Tokyo (which is the earliest and most direct train to take )
5. Similarly, leaving Kyoto -which train will allow us to leave the latest from Kyoto yet still enjoy hopefully the beautiful view by daylight to Takayama
