Hello JR experts,
We are a family spending two weeks in Japan in June/July. We plan to stay in Tokyo, then travel to Hakone then back to Tokyo before going on to Kyoto, then Hiroshima and Miyajaama, then Kanazawa, before returning to Tokyo.
Will buying individual tickets be cheaper than buying the Japan Rail Pass? Thank you very much.

Hello,

Individual tickets would work out cheaper for your itinerary. While the main benefit of the JR Pass is its convenience - as it avoids having to pay for each leg separately for all family members - individual tickets will provide much better savings for your specific route.

Children under 6 travel free if sitting on your lap on the Shinkansen, while kids aged 6-11 get child fares (half the adult price).

Advance tickets for the Tokyo-Kyoto leg can be purchased here.

Safe travels!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
