HIDA Express - Takayama to Kyoto

We have purchased the 14 day green class JR pass as part of our trip will be during Golden Week.

We will be travelling from Takayama to Kyoto 23 April -

The only direct train around 3pm doesn't appear to have a green class option at that time. Are we best to do a change in Nagoya? Do you know would the change be on the same platform - and worth doing or is the direct train much more convenient? As it's one of the longer journeys we think green class will be a nice bonus. Anything else to consider before booking?

Also Is there a preferred side of the train to sit that you'd recommend?

Thanks again for the great advice

Hi there!

You can check out the trains covered by your JR Pass from Takayama to Kyoto here.

Nagoya Station is quite big, so you'll need to head to a different platform to catch your next train. However, the station is very well-marked with English signs, and it should be easy to find your way around.

Here are some tips: Both sides are beautiful as you follow the Hida River, but sitting on the right side usually offers the best views of the rocky river gorges and the valley scenery. Once you transfer to the Shinkansen in Nagoya for Kyoto, you'll want to stay on the right side to catch a glimpse of the mountains.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
