10 days in Japan with 7 days JR PASS

Hello! I’ll be heading over to Japan with my friends from 19th - 29th March. We will be going for a total of 10 days with a 7 days JR pass. I was wondering when should I start activating my pass or there are alternatives for the last or first 3 days at Japan. I will be arriving at Narita airport and will be going straight to Osaka. We will be travelling around the area to Kyoto etc. for 5 days and then another 5 days at Tokyo or areas around Tokyo. Can we get some advice on how to best plan our itinery? Thank you!

Hi there,

The key to using the JR Pass well is to use it on the longer routes that cost the most, especially when you use the Shinkansen. Going to Osaka is definitely one of those and I would thus start using the JR Pass when you arrive in Japan right away.

Here's how to exchange the JR Pass at Narita Airport.

For the last couple of days you could just buy normal tickets or use a Suica card for easy travel around Tokyo.
