12 days - Where to go and which pass to get?

Hi, we a group of 6 just bought air ticket arriving in Osaka at 15.30pm (Tuesday) and returning at Osaka also at 13.40pm (Saturday). Although is only 12 days, we would like to explore Japan including Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo or any other suggestion.

I am confused with all the name of the place and there are so many type of passes.

We will definitely get the JR pass as it covers a lot of places, but the 7 day pass is a bit short -especially to cover all- while getting the 14 day pass seem a bit of a waste.

I am thinking to start with Osaka, asked we are arriving at 15.30pm. If we are getting the 7 day pass, how can we utilize it for the 12 days? We will use it more in Osaka area or Tokyo?

What about after Tokyo, do you have any plans? From where will you fly out of Japan? Knowing this will help me find the best option for your trip.

As it stands now I would recommend getting familiar with the Kansai Area, this is where cities like Kyoto, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Wakayama are located. Within this area, local travel is not expensive. You could then look at using a 7 day JR Pass for longer distance travel, for instance to Tokyo but I would also recommend Himeji and Hiroshima.

Yes, you have mentioned few places and it does help us. We will fly out of Japan from Osaka.

In that case, a 7 day JR would work well if you can make the return Osaka - Tokyo within the 7 days validity period. As mentioned, you there are alternatives available for travel around Kansai.

Going to Himeji and Hiroshima would also get you very good value out of the JR Pass.
