Hello -- thank you in advance for your help. Our family of 4 is traveling through Japan with the below itinerary. Does it make sense to buy an unlimited pass? Would we need a regional pass instead? Any suggested changes to itinerary are more than welcome. Thanks.

Day 1 - 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Hakone (overnight)
Day 4: Tokyo
Day 5 - 7: Kyoto
Day 8 - 9: Hiroshima
Day 10 - 11: Osaka
Day 12: Mount Koya (overnight)
Day 13: Osaka
Day 14: Tokyo

Hi there,

You will be traveling a good amount and a 14 day JR Pass would fit your travel plans very well. You would make nice savings compared to purchasing normal tickets and the JR Pass would cover nearly all your travel. Especially the longer trips to Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo is where the JR Pass is most effectively used.

Note that you may still need a bit of additional local transport at parts too. Think of travel within the Hakone region and between Osaka - Koya-san.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
