Hi,

We will be traveling a lot while in Japan. We are wondering which pass to buy and when to activate it. Our flat in Tokyo is on the Yamanote line (Ebisu). Could you please advise us the best option?

Day 1: (4 okt) arrive Tokyo (Narita)
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo
Day 4: Hakone (Hakone Free Pass)
Day 5: Tokyo
Day 6: Yamanouchi
Day 7: Matsumoto
Day 8: Matsumoto
Day 9: Takayama
Day 10:Takayama/Shirakawa
Day 11: Kyoto
Day 12: Osaka/Universal Studios
Day 13: Kyoto
Day 14: Nara
Day 15: Kyoto
Day 16: Hiroshima / Miyajima
Day 17: Osaka
Day 18: Okinawa
Day 20: Okinawa
Day 21: Okinawa
Day 22: Okinawa
Day 23: Okinawa
Day 24: Okinawa
Day 25: Okinawa
Day 25: Tokyo (Haneda)
Day 26: Tokyo
Day 27: Tokyo
Day 28: Back to Narita

Hi there,

A 14 day JR Pass would be the more effective option when used from Day 6 to day to day 19. This would cover all the expensive train routes.

Then all that is left is local travel around Tokyo, for which you can buy day passes, such as for the Tokyo Metro and for Hakone, where you'll use the Hakone Free Pass.
