Exploring Kyushu advice

We have 5 days to explore /Kyushu in early April. Travelling in Japan appears expensive. But we decided to purchase 7d /JR rail pass to cover getting from Tokyo to Kyoto, then Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

We are trying to decide whether to purchase another pass or rent a car from Fukuoka. I think the cost will be similar but a car will be easier to get around and cover more attractions.

We were thinking commute from Fukuoka and overnight in Beppu. Then spend the day going to Yufuin and Aso-san staying overnight in Tateka or Kagoshima. Day or 2 in Kagoshima then head back to Fukuoka.

Any suggestions most welcome re itinerary, drive vs train, and if there is expressway pass

Hi there,

I don't have much experience driving around Kyushu, other than some trips where friends drove me around. I have extensively used rail travel around Kyushu and enjoy it very much.

This makes it hard for me to compare both options. What I can do is inform you as good as I can about rail travel in Kyushu. You can use the JR to travel to all the cities you want to travel to and enjoy special trains like Yufuin no Mori. Between Hakata and Yufuin/Beppu. If you use this train, start in Yufuin and go to Beppu after. It would make for faster routing. You can then get to Aso by local or express train from Beppu.

You can also use the Kyushu Shinkansen from Fukuoka (Hakata station) to Kagoshima using the JR Kyushu Pass. This pass would be a good companion to your JR Pass and gives great value compared to purchasing normal tickets. Especially if you travel daily.
