Hi we are travelling in summer and doing the following - I have included day trips as well as I am unsure how the JR would work with local trains and not just shinkansen.
Kansai Osaka Airport to Donbori area of Osaka 3 nights
Osaka - Hiroshima 4 nights
day trip Hiroshima - Fukuoka
Hiroshima - Nagoya 3 nights
Nagoya - Nagano 5 nights
day trips to Matsumoto and Hakuba
Nagano - Tokyo (Ueno station) 6 nights
Day trip to see Mt Fuji (either Kawaguchico or Hakone or Arakura shrine station - unsure at moment)
Tokyo - Kyoto 5 nights
Day trips to Nara and Kobe
Kyoto - Kansai airport

I understand we can only get a 21 day pass but our trip is over 4 weeks so we would need to factor in when is best to activate the pass. Is it worth getting the pass at all? Any help or advice is much appreciated! thank you in advance.

Hi Claire,

I'm happy to help! You can make seat reservations for the Shinkansen once you are in Japan. For local trains, you can simply use your pass to go through the ticket gates.

You can activate your pass on the day you travel to Hiroshima. Given your planned route, a 21-day Nationwide JR Pass would be the best option, provided you visit these cities within a 14-day window:

Osaka - Hiroshima - Fukuoka - Nagoya - Nagano - Matsumoto - Hakuba - Nagano - Tokyo - Kyoto

Here are some travel tips for using your JR Pass!

Mt Fuji Area: Your JR Pass covers travel as far as Otsuki Station (for the Kawaguchiko area) and Odawara Station (for the Hakone area). To continue your journey from these stations, these separate local passes can be useful:

Hakuba: The JR Pass covers your journey as far as Nagano Station. From there, you will need to take a bus (approx. 60-75 minutes) to reach the Hakuba Valley.

I hope this helps with planning your journey!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
