Hi,

I am visiting Japan for a couple of weeks in mid April. The first four days will be spent in Tokyo. After that I plan to visiting Kyoto for a few days. Now my question is when leaving Kyoto what would be the best plan (order) if I want to visit Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama before heading back Tokyo? Is 4 days/3 nights enough to experience those three places? For Shirakawa I was thinking of making it a daytrip. I have a flight that arrives and departures from Tokyo so I have to return there.

By the way - Is there still a chance to see the cherry blossoms around April 14-18 in the towns I am visiting?

Kind regards,
Christina

Hi Christina,

Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama is the exact order I'd do it coming from Kyoto. You can use the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago and onward to Takayama and visit Shirakawago in between. Although going it as a separate day trip from either Takayama or Kanazawa works. I think I would do 2days Kanazawa 1 day Shirakawago and 1 day Takayama.

The cherry blossom will all depend on the weather but you may have a chance to see some in the higher elevations of the Japanese Alps around that period.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

This is very helpful. One last question - is the 7-day JR-pass the best way to go for these stops? Rather than buying individual tickets for Tokyo-Kyoto, Kyoto-Kanazawa, Takayama-Tokyo? I believe there is a bus to and from Shirakawago that is a seperate operating company?

Kind regards,
Christina
