Nagoya to Takayama to Shiragawago to Matsumoto

Hi Daniel
Would like to seek your advise on the following trip: I would be using the 7Days JR Pass for these places:

Usage of the 7Days Pass:

Day 1 activate JR Pass on 10 March
Arrive Haneda airport on 10/3 and will activate the JR pass to Nagoya for our Nagoya women's marathon which falls on 12/3/17

Day 4 on 13 March
Will leave Nagoya to Takayama using JR Pass.
Stay overnight at Takayama.

Day 5 on 14 March
Take a Nohi bus to Shiragawago.
I would like to ask is bus the only accessible route to Shiragawago or can we take a train there?
We will stay a night at Shiragawago

Day 6 on 15 March
Leave Shirakawago to Takayama and take JR train back to Nagoya.
Will make a day trip to Matsumoto.
Can you advise us on how to get there using our JR pass?
Then back to Nagoya to stay a night before leaving for Tokyo

Day 7 on 16 March
Leave Nagoya to Tokyo.

We are also planning to go to Hakone and would like to know how much does it costs to travel 2 ways on the train?

Best Regards
Nichole

Hi Nichole,
Since I'm here I'll jump in and try to help you. First, there is no rail access to Shirakawago - you need to pay and make bus reservations.

For getting to Matsumoto from Takayama, you can get there by JR rail as you can see here. But as you can see, even with the best connection it will take you at least 4½ hours to go around the mountain ranges. Many people, even some with the JR Pass, opt to pay for a bus which can get there in just 2½ hours and costing ¥3190. But it's up to you. You would more than break even on a 7 day pass either way.

For Hakone, if not using the JR Pass anymore, the best way is using a Hakone Free Pass and leave from Shinjuku. The Loop Course is a good way to see the sights and takes a full day.

Good luck.
