I am confused to cover this as a day trip from Tokyo or make my base on previous day at Matsumoto.

I am considering a day trip possibility from Tokyo, to save a day. But if I do this trip from Tokyo using JR Pass, can you advice me what time I have to start from Tokyo and what time I will be able to reach back.

My alternate plan is to stay at matsumoto on previous day and start at 8 AM next day for this trip.

Please let me know what time I have to start earliest from tokyo and if this day trip is recommended at all.

Hi there,

You can user the Azusa and Super Azusa ltd express trains between Tokyo and Matsumoto using the JR Pass. This is a scenic and comfortable ride. The train terminates at Shinjuku station, which is a great place to start exploring Tokyo. Still it is 3 hours each way, so leave early to get the most time in Tokyo. You could then take a train back at 7 or 8.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
