Hi, my husband and I are going to for a 9 day trip to Japan (our first time) in a few months and wanted to know when the best time to activate the JR Pass would be--I'm thinking we would like to purchase the 7 day pass.

Day 1 - arrive at Narita, explore Tokyo
Day 2 - Tokyo
Day 3 - Tokyo
Day 4 - Hakone (stay in Ryokan)
Day 5 - Kyoto
Day 6 - Kyoto
Day 7 - Kyoto
Day 8 - half day Hiroshima, half day Miyajima (stay in Miyajima)
Day 9 - Half day Miyajima, go to Osaka
Day 10 - fly home from Osaka

A few questions:
1. When would be the best day to activate the JR Pass? Would a 14 day make more sense, even though more expensive?

  1. What is the best way to get from Hakone to Kyoto? How long does it take?

  2. Does JR Pass cover the ferry to Miyajima?

  3. Does the schedule look good? Anything we should look into changing?

Thank you!

Hi there,

For the best use of the rail pass. I would use the rail pass from Day 4 - Day 10.

1.) You can use the Hikari bullet train directly from Odawara station (Hakone) to Kyoto. This will take about 3 hours.

2.) Yes!

3.) I like it! The trip to Hiroshima/Miyajima really adds something extra :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel
